Green Claims Directive
The name commonly used for a separate EU legislative proposal on substantiating and communicating explicit environmental claims.
Example
It has been discussed alongside changes to general consumer-protection rules.
The catch
Do not describe a proposal as enacted law or confuse its status with Directive 2024/825.
In more depth
Green Claims Directive, explained.
The proposed Green Claims Directive would set the method for proving an environmental claim, while the Empowering Consumers Directive mainly sets out what traders may not say. The European Commission's proposal asked companies to back explicit claims with recognised scientific evidence, consider significant impacts across a product's life cycle and have the evidence checked by an accredited third party before the claim went public. It also proposed rules for comparative claims and for environmental labelling schemes.
Its passage has been politically contested. Parliament and Council positions differed on points such as the burden on small businesses and the scope of prior checks, and the versions of the text reflect those disputes. Write about it with dates attached. Refer to the proposal or a named draft, and check the EU legislative record before describing where it stands.
