The maths of many.

Does a small monthly climate contribution make a difference?

Shared support adds up. Companies can take part now; people can keep their place and follow the work.

A shared effort makes sense when you look beyond one person. Companies can start that effort now. A sum nobody adds up stays small for ever. The story changes when people see a shared effort taking shape.

Nothing in this article predicts how many people will join ClimateCurrent. Company support depends on who takes part, and the tonnes are estimates.

Show the working

Company support adds up across the places companies pay for. The company price list shows what taking part costs.

Companies choose their plan and pay for places for their people. Here for yourself? Keep your place and follow the story.

The tonnes shown for company support are estimates of what that funding could help make possible. They are a guide, and the estimate is still being validated against real projects.

A number you can watch

Give to a climate cause and too often the money vanishes into a bank statement. You see the debit, then silence, and by the third month it feels like paying for a magazine that never arrives.

Watching a number climb is an old habit. Church halls have hung hand-drawn fundraising thermometers by the door for generations, red felt-tip creeping upwards a week at a time.

Our working assumption, and we label it as one, is that people keep going when they can watch a shared total move. Climate Outreach’s Britain Talks Climate & Nature research maps how different groups in Britain think about climate and nature, and it points towards communication grounded in people’s own values. A shared figure leaves room for that. A retired teacher and a bike courier need no common motive to watch the same number grow.

The IPCC’s mitigation assessment gives social conditions and collective change their own place in demand-side mitigation, next to technology and infrastructure. A visible total is one small piece of social infrastructure. It tells you that other people turned up as well, and your own debit history cannot.

A total also hands you a better question. Do you want to be part of that number? Most people can answer it at a bus stop, which is more than anyone can say for an emissions calculator.

None of this works if the total flatters. When results fall short, we correct the record, and the correction gets the same prominence as the number it replaces.

Follow the work

The first month of any shared total is its least impressive one. Follow the projects we co-finance and our first site. We’ll publish what the work achieves, with its method and sources. Ask to be told when joining for yourself opens. Keep your place and follow the work as the story develops.
