Constructive hope

Hope grounded in an honest view of a problem together with a realistic sense of what people can do about it.

Example

A volunteer who sees a neighbourhood heat pump scheme succeed may feel encouraged to join the next one.

The catch

Reassurance that downplays risks is a different thing and can weaken motivation to act.

In more depth

Constructive hope, explained.

Constructive hope rests on evidence that action works, which separates it from optimism about outcomes. It draws on facts such as the IPCC's finding that unit costs of solar and wind power have fallen sharply, and on the knowledge that people one trusts are also acting. That second source links it to collective efficacy.

It can sit alongside worry. Many people feel climate anxiety and constructive hope at the same time, and the hope does not require the worry to disappear. Communicators build it by pairing an honest account of risk with a concrete next step and a credible example of that step succeeding somewhere comparable.
