Environmental stewardship
Responsible care for the natural environment through decisions and practice.
Example
A community may protect local habitats and monitor changes over time.
The catch
A stewardship label should be supported by specific actions.
In more depth
Environmental stewardship, explained.
Environmental stewardship rests on the idea of holding land and resources in trust for those who come later, an ethic found in farming, forestry and many Indigenous traditions of land management. Public policy pays for some of it. EU agri-environment schemes reward farmers for practices such as keeping hedgerows and leaving buffer strips beside rivers, which protect biodiversity and water quality.
The word also travels into business. Product stewardship means a producer stays responsible for goods after sale, an idea EU waste law formalises as extended producer responsibility for packaging, batteries and electronics. That version comes with fees and collection targets, which makes it easier to verify than a general promise of care.
