The first site

Building towards
our own first site.

Steady monthly support lets us finance a whole site at once with a lender, instead of saving for years.

You'll follow every step: the projects we co-finance, the site we choose, who helps finance it, and what it does once it runs.

We start by co-financing.

Our three questions

  1. Does our money make it happen? We look for work that would not go ahead without extra funding.

  2. Does it work in time? We look for an effect within years, not decades.

  3. How much warming does it avoid per euro? Among the work we can fund, we prefer what avoids the most.

To start, we'll co-finance methane projects that can't go ahead without extra funding, so your support makes real work happen that otherwise wouldn't. We're choosing that partner now.

We look for work that wouldn't happen without us. We don't fund work the law already requires, or work that is already fully paid for.

For every project we co-finance, we'll name it here, say who we fund it with and why it passed our three questions, and show how the money is shared between co-financing and the first site. We update this at least every three months.

One site helps build the next.

The work we fund may earn certificates: units that a recognised independent standard issues for reductions that were measured and checked.

Certificates for the part we paid for are ClimateCurrent's. We may sell them, and every euro a sale brings in, after the costs of certifying and selling, goes back into methane work, including repaying the loan for the first site. None of it goes to ClimateCurrent's owner.

A buyer may count a certificate's tonnes for itself. The tonnes companies and members see are the tonnes their support helped make possible, never their own reductions. For each project, we show here how many of its tonnes were sold as certificates.

Four steps to a first site

  1. Steady monthly support. We are here

Companies take part each month, and giving as a person opens in November. That steady income is what we would repay a loan from.

You'll see here: how many companies and people take part.
  2. Choose the site and the lender

A place where methane escapes and where stopping it needs funding. And a lender who finances climate work on fair terms: an impact fund, a green bank, or a foundation that lends at low interest.

You'll see here: which site we choose, what it costs, and who helps finance it.
  3. Finance and build

The plan is that the lender finances the whole site at once, and ClimateCurrent repays it from what comes in each month. Nobody who takes part lends anything.

You'll see here: when the money is there, and when building starts.
  4. See what it does

Once it runs, you see what it does, as a cautious estimate of the tonnes your support helped make possible.

You'll see here: what the site does once it runs.

Who takes part

Founding places are limited

What is a founding company?

Know a lender for the first site?

We're looking for a lender who finances climate work on fair terms: an impact fund, a green bank, or a foundation that lends at low interest. Know one, or work for one? Tell us.

When they help finance the first site, we'll thank them here, with their name and logo if they want.

This is for introductions only. We don't ask you to lend anything yourself.

Questions about the first site

Asked and answered.

What do you co-finance?

Methane projects that can't go ahead without extra funding. We don't fund work the law already requires, or work that is already fully paid for.

Do I lend anything if I take part?

No. The plan is that the lender finances the whole site at once, and ClimateCurrent repays it from what comes in each month. Nobody who takes part lends anything.

Who owns the certificates?

Certificates for the part we paid for are ClimateCurrent's. Every euro a sale brings in, after the costs of certifying and selling, goes back into methane work, including repaying the loan for the first site. None of it goes to ClimateCurrent's owner.

How often do you update this page?

At least every three months, with each project we co-finance and how the money is shared.

You don't have to wait for anyone.
